Zero energy building enclosures: airtightness lab for residential buildings
November 27 @ 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
BCIT’s CESA 1111 course offered in Burnaby.
This lab course will allow students to practice installation of various air barrier system approaches to meet the airtightness requirements of the Upper Steps of the BC Energy Step Code (1.0 ACH) and the Passive House standard (0.6 ACH). Students have already developed foundational understanding of air barriers through pre-requisite courses. With eight hours in the BCIT High Performance Lab, students will work through a number of hands-on lab stations to build, test, or evaluate air barrier systems using a different approaches and materials. Lab activities will cover various air barrier details for foundations, above and below grade walls, roofs, interfaces, windows, balconies, penetrations, and more. Students will develop quality control methods and practice locating and repairing leaks in air barrier systems. Builders, tradespeople, insulators, designers, building officials, and energy advisors would benefit from this course.
