Location

This course will be held in Terrace and Powell River. There is a mandatory two-hour live web lecture held approximately one week before the day-long in-person session.

Description

This course will develop knowledge of building assemblies and airtightness to meet the requirements of the Upper Steps of the BC Energy Step Code including the Passive House standard.

The course starts with a 2-hour lecture to refresh understanding of building science fundamentals, 6 principles of high performance buildings and the Energy Step Code. Over the course of a day students will apply this knowledge by constructing and evaluating select high performance assemblies based on sample projects.

The assemblies selected support a critical comparison of the performance, constructability, and costs of different approaches to meet the thermal performance (TEDI) and airtightness (ACH) metrics of the BC Energy Step Code or the Passive House standard. Learning will cover various assembly approaches (above and below grade walls, roofs, etc) and detailing solutions for interfaces, windows, and penetrations.

Part 1 (live, online lecture): Mon. February 3, 7-9 p.m. via online course portal (BCIT Learning Hub)

Part 2 (in-person lecture/lab): Tues. February 11, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Terrace Arena, 3320 Kalum St.

Note: Course has quizzes and final exam to be completed in online course portal by March 11, 2020.

Powell River

Part 1 (live, online lecture): Thurs. March 19, 6-8 p.m., via online course portal (BCIT Learning Hub)

Part 2 (in-person lecture/lab): Tues. March 31, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Dwight Hall, 6274 Walnut St.
