Build energy smart three-part online workshop

A free three-part online webinar series offered by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and Regional District of Central Kootenay, in collaboration with BCIT.
Description
The RDKB and RDCK are hosting a three-part online workshop series that has been developed by BCIT professionals and industry experts for building in the Kootenays and the Boundary. Aimed at builders, designers, architects, owner-builders and building officials, this series provides a more detailed review of the key areas of high efficiency building.
These workshops are streamed from the BCIT lab providing practical demonstrations, mock ups and case studies.
All workshops run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Please register for each workshop individually.
The workshop series is funded through FortisBC Build Better program and BCHydro.
Workshop 1: Airtightness, September 8
The core of building efficiency and the BC Energy Step Code is having a high performance building envelope. The first stage of this is maintaining airtightness in your building. This workshop will cover some of the most asked questions:
- What is an air barrier?
- Interior vs exterior
- Air barrier vs. vapour barrier
- How to manage on site and envelope penetrations
- What trades should look out for
- Air barrier details and material choices
- Airtightness testing

Workshop 2: Assembly details, September 22
This workshop will take a deep dive into assembly details, wall and roof designs, transitions and insulation for your new build. It covers:
- Wall design comparisons
- Truss vs. joist roofs, conditioned vs. unconditioned attics
- Insulation
- Pros and cons of different materials
- Internal vs. external insulation
- What to use where
- Thermal bridging
- Understanding assembly drawings

Workshop 3: Mechanicals, October 6
Following the first 2 workshops that focused on super energy-efficient buildings envelope, this final workshop will focus on the selection, design and install of efficient mechanical systems. It covers:

- Two B.C.-based case studies and relationship with building envelope
- Electric vs. natural gas systems
- Pros and cons of available options
- Right sizing of your mechanical system
